When it comes to linking LWW and Ovid resources, there are a few key factors that LibKey considers to determine the "best" source for access.
Articles in Press or “Ahead of Print”
For early access content, LibKey prioritizes LWW URLs over Ovid due to:
- Indexing delays: Articles in Press (AIP) may take time to appear on Ovid with full-text access or DOI discoverability.
- Reciprocal access: Most Ovid subscribers can access AIP content directly at LWW, even if LWW isn’t explicitly listed in a library’s subscription holdings—assuming authentication is properly configured (more on that below).
Pro Tip: We recommend including LWW in your EZproxy stanza or configuring it as a resource in your OpenAthens catalog to ensure smooth access.
Linking Syntax – Ovid (for non-AIP/Ahead of Print)
LibKey uses Ovid-supported syntax for linking. While Ovid has launched a new platform at oce.ovid.com, direct linking to that domain is not recommended.
Instead, LibKey directs users to:
- ovidsp.ovid.com (standard linking), or
- https://openathens.ovid.com/OAKeystone/deeplink (for institutions using SAML-based authentication via OpenAthens).
PDF Access
In general, Ovid offers broader PDF availability than LWW, since LWW access depends on:
- What the publisher provides
- Whether LibKey’s scraper can identify a PDF version
In cases where an LWW PDF isn’t available, LibKey may offer a hybrid approach—for example, linking the article to LWW while directing the PDF link to Ovid.
Platform Tools
LWW is primarily tailored for individual access, while Ovid is designed with institutional access in mind. While LWW may offer more current content (especially AIP), Ovid often provides enhanced tools and interface features that support deeper engagement.
Authentication
To maximize access—especially to AIP content—we strongly recommend configuring authentication for both Ovid and LWW whenever possible.
