Third Iron supports optional linking to many popular Inter-Library Loan (ILL) and Link Resolver systems when full text is not available to an article due to an aggregator's embargo or when the best available access to a title is from a source with a "hard end date" - either from an aggregator not supporting a title after a certain date or because the library has cancelled the title from the publisher, but maintains perpetual access for some years.
These Access Options are available for the following products:
- BrowZine Web
- BrowZine mobile apps (iOS and Android)
- LibKey Nomad
Libraries may elect to link users to one of the following for applicable articles:
- Link resolver
- ILL form, such as that used by the ILLIAD system (must have OpenURL and form population enabled)
- Email request, ideal for libraries that do not have a compatible ILL system
Configuration Options
As noted above, libraries may elect to send users to their Link Resolver, populated ILL request form, or an email request. Only ONE of these options may be enabled for each library. The differences are explained below:Link Resolver Option:
Most link resolvers already contain a link of their own to ILL forms, so many libraries prefer to connect their link resolver as it offers users a wider selection of options than ILL.Here is an example of how it looks when referred to a link resolver page (example shown from mobile app):
ILL Option:
Users will be taken to a pre-populated ILL form with the article details filled out for them. They will simply need to complete their personal details and submit the form.
Here's an example of an ILLIAD ILL Login form request from BrowZine. Most systems first require the user to log in. Then, after logging in, the metadata will auto-populate the article request fields, making the request very easy for the user:
Email Request Option:
This option is ideal for libraries that do not use a Link Resolver and/or do not have a compatible ILL system. It works by linking users to their default email program (e.g. Mac Mail, Outlook, Thunderbird) on their computer or device. An email will then populate with the library's email address and subject, and the article request details will conveniently appear in the email body.
Users may use the space below the article details to include additional messaging or request details.
Here is an example of how this will look:
How does this work?
This works within BrowZine Web and the BrowZine mobile app, as well as for LibKey Nomad. For BrowZine, there are slight differences in how this works between platforms. Read below to lear more about each platform functions in this regard.Users of LibKey Nomad are automatically rerouted to the library's link resolver/ILL/Document Delivery system when they use Nomad to access an article that is not in your holdings. Read more on how LibKey Nomad works on the LibKey Nomad Technical FAQ page.
BrowZine Web
If you do NOT yet have this feature enabled, the user will see a simple message indicating that the full text is unavailable:
If the user clicks on one of these articles they will be reminded that they do not have full text access to this title:
If you DO have this feature enabled, the user will see a different screen notifying them that they could see what other options are available to request the article:
Users who click the above button will then be taken to the library's configured article-retrieval method/system. As noted above, this may be an ILL request form, Link Resolver or email request.
If you do NOT yet have this feature enabled, the user will see a simple message indicating that the full text is unavailable:
With this feature enabled however, users will receive a different message indicating that they can either open up the article to a form-filled-out ILL page or get linked to their link resolver resolution page.
Ready to get started? To enable this optional feature in BrowZine, simply fill out our ILL/Link Resolver request form.
